This Blog is OVER!

NEW BLOG!
Hey folks, i was talking about it a bit before, and i've made my decision.  I will no longer be updating or adding to this blog and only time will tell how long it remains.  Instead i've started a new blog to focus on filmmaking and projects.

I encourage any of you who bother to check in on here, to bookmark the new blog and check it at your leisure.  I hope to eventually share videos, as well as updates regarding film fests, projects, possible reviews, and movie ideas.

The new blog is titled Editing Luke and is @  www.editingluke.blogspot.com

Decline of My Blog

on the verge.
Over the past year i've noticed a slow, but steady decline in the readership of my blog.  Mind you, it always dips down in the summer because people are away, and i also posted fewer entries in the last year than i did in the first.  Still, keeping the blog has ranged from an emotional outlet, to a forced chore, to a well documented diary of what was on my mind.  Although readership is important, i guess it's always been about me anyways.  If i didn't like doing it i wouldn't, but with facebook proving to be a more immediate way to keep in touch the blog is seeming a bit supurfluous at the moment.  At the best of times, Luke's Emporium of Senseless Insanity and Wonder was getting just under 100 hits a week, now it's down between 30-40, sometimes fewer.  Not sure if i'm going to stop, only time will tell, but i will be posting less and less.  I've been toying with the idea of ending this blog since january and starting up a new one specifically about fandrix productions and my filmmaking.  I'm thinking that would actually be more beneficial in allowing me to share my work, and it would also keep me on target and goal orientated.  I guess i'm talking about more of a site in general, with a blog component.  I guess we'll see what happens as i wean myself of my blog.

Rushmore

ROAD TRIP!
Despite all the reading and research, when it came to actually seeing everything close-up the feeling was unparalleled.  The idea for the trip stemmed simply from the desire to see Mount Rushmore (which based on my location on Regina, made the road trip seem more attainable).  Andrea and I made all the plans in advance and over the course of a week ended up travelling 3941km while visiting 6 states (north dakota, south dakota, wyoming, nebraska, colorado and montana).  Our hotel was in Rapid City, SD and thanks to a sale on expedia, we ended up staying in one of the higher end hotels which had just been renovated as of february 2007.  Despite the distance the travelling was actually pretty relaxed and fun.  Andrea and i kept each other entertained with movie trivia, lots of music and baseball-sized jawbreakers.

Although there is a ton i could get into, i'm gonna save it for the vacation video.  However, the highlights were:  Mount Rushmore, which we visited on our first and last full days seeing it in the bright sun and under a cloud of fog and rain.  Crazy Horse was also pretty amazing as it's still being carved in the black hills, and is much larger than rushmore.  Bear Country USA, where we drove around a giant nature park where the animals walk around freely.  We saw black bears, reindeer and wolves right up next to the car . . . and one elk enjoyed licking the windows and chewing on the aerial.  Devil's Tower, the site where the aliens landed in Close Encounters in Wyoming was pretty impressive as well, and we enjoyed a relaxed (albeit windy) hike around it.  Reptile Gardens, where we got up close with crocodiles, snakes and turtles (seeing them be fed, etc.) . . . i purchased a steve irwin action figure in the gift shop for good measure.  Deadwood, a historic old west town made more popular by the HBO series of the same name.  Andrea and I had a drink in the bar where Wild Bill was shot before heading up to the cemetery to see the graves of Bill Hikock and Calamity Jane.  Chimney Rock, the most recognizable natural monument along the historic oregon trail took a while to get to, but there was something exciting about being in that spot.  Cosmos Mystery Area, located in the black hills this place is a bizarre but captivating place where things simply don't make sense.  There seems to be a natural force that pulls against you in certain areas, i was even able to balance in a chair resting only on a ledge of the wall.  I thought it was just parlor tricks, but even the trees in the area bend and grow towards an invisible force . . . just weird.

It was a pretty busy week, but a great experience all around.  I squished another book full of pennies, stocked up on postcards, saw a bunch of historic places, experienced first hand the changing scenery from the car, and had a great time with Andrea.  With this trip under our belts I can't help but think about how far away we could drive next time . . . Disneyworld here we come!!

A Lengthy Experience/Move

so i discovered that they (the residence staff) are making me move.

this all started on tuesday because i needed to go get my parking pass.  so first i go to parking services and ask to buy a pass and they tell me that the residence has one reserved.  i have to walk over to the new rez, because even though rent has continually gone up in college west, services have gone down and our office hasn't been open at all this week (making it a hassle to figure out what's going on, and to get my mail).  the new rez then tells me that they won't be selling passes until may 1, which seems like bullshit because what difference does it make.  frustrated i just say i'll buy the same pass as i have now, not a reserved residence space (i end up having to go back to parking services to get the pass, but i've got it).  the one girl at the new rez office over hears me though and out of nowhere asks if i'll be able to move tomorrow (wed).  up till then i was under the impression that i wouldn't have to move (more on this in a bit).  i explained the situation, my leaving on the 29th for the south dakota trip, yadda yadda.  they seem oblivious and i say get the keys to me asap so i can move then.

wednesday comes and there are no keys in my mailbox so i say screw it.  i did get the package with my loan stuff though after having to find someone to open the office to get the package for me . . . idiots.  today (thur) has been non stop madness.  i filled out all my loan papers this morning, ran to the adhum building to get my papers signed, rushed to the bank to get the void checks to attach, and went to the designated post office to send them away.  all the while it was pouring rain and the loan papers are about as durable as one-ply toilet paper.  anyways, despite all the rushing, the loan stuff is sent away so i should have the money for school when i get back . . . personal expenses, not so much.

before i completed my loan stuff though i had stopped off at the new rez office again because i still had no keys to move, and packing and moving my room takes some time.  they still didn't have keys for me, but i learned that someone who's staying over the summer will be moving into my room . . . it's like, what is the logic in that, i'm staying too!!!  i gave them my cell# so they could call me when they had keys.  by the time i finished my loan stuff, they were ready (it was 3pm).  they ended up switching my room because the room they were going to put me in still had someone living there.  the real frustrating part of all this is that i figured i'd get to skip the hassle of moving because i was staying for the summer, but no.

i thought i wasn't going to have to move because i'd overheard some of the cleaning staff say that people weren't going to have to leave this section of the 5th floor.  the truth is, students don't have to leave this part, but seems everyone is being moved around regardless.

i get my new keys, and go to the new room to check it out.  someone is living there and she is equally surprised to see me . . . we get to talking about how much we hate the residence staff and then make sweet love all afternoon . . . well we talked about the residence staff anyways.  she said she'd be gone by tonight, i said i'd be back by noon tomorrow . . . so i will move into this new room, i'm leaving the rez staff out of it and hopefully i can stick it out in this new place.  the kicker of all of this is that my current room is on the main floor of suite 510 . . . i am now moving to the main floor suite of 509!! directly next door, one room over!!  i'm happy that the room is close for moving into and that it looks the same as mine, but the fact that i'm still on 5th, moving just one room over boggles me.  it's like they took everyones room number at the end of the semester, put them in a hat, and pulled out where they were going to put everyone now.  they aren't moving me because of neccessity, they're moving me because they seize any opportunity to hassle students (i'm sure i could write a compelling essay on the topic based on my experiences alone).

(sigh)

i'll let you know the deal when all this is taken care of.  i figured this free week would be a chance to catch up on reading, maybe watch some movies and get excited about my vacation.  well, i was wrong.  university is all about experiences, and at least they are motivating me to get out of here (the one plus side).

2 Years of Blogging & Facebook

It's Just Incredible!
Well today my blog turns 2 years old . . . 2 years of randomly posting my thoughts, my likes and dislikes.  I thought i'd found everything i needed on the internet, and then out of nowhere came Facebook (which it seems everyone else has been a part of for a while now, haha).  I'd like to say that i've always had fun keeping my blog, i wouldn't post anything if i didn't.  However, in the 2 days that i've been a part of facebook i have caught up with a handful of people i have not talked to in years . . . some even since elementary school!!  It's an incredible feeling to know that in such a short time i've back tracked with people that seemed long gone.  The blog has been a great way of chit chatting in a personal way, although facebook is actually considerably easier than i thought at linking people and fostering communication between old friends.  You never know who's reading your blog exactly, but on facebook the connection is clearly more direct.  I can see how people get addicted to it, so i've been doing my best to only spend a limited amount of time on there . . . the first day i must have been on for hours and hours.  Anyways, it'll be interesting to see how things go from here, both with the blog and facebook.  The computer is becoming even more essential to my daily life . . . not sure how good that is, but catching up is great!
